Business &
Products Introduction
At UIUC, Professor Ting Lu leads a synthetic biology research laboratory devoted to the design, analysis, and engineering of microorganisms and their communities for sustainable biomanufacturing, with a particular emphasis on microbial-based food production. In one of his flagship projects, Professor Lu and his colleagues are developing a transformative technology that generates nutritious, palatable, and safe food directly from minimal resources—air, water, and electricity. This highly interdisciplinary effort unites researchers across diverse fields, bridging electrochemistry, plasma science, metabolic engineering, microbial fermentation, flavor chemistry, and bioprocess engineering. The project promises to eliminate dependence on arable land and reduce vulnerability to climate, infrastructure, and supply-chain limitations inherent to conventional agriculture, thereby enabling food generation in environments where traditional farming is not feasible. Collectively, this work advances a new paradigm for resilient and sustainable food systems.
